Grammar in Songs

Use songs to listen for specific grammar structures, such as passive voice, adverbs or participial adjectives. This can be used as review. Each group can listen for its specific grammar (i.e. passive voice, or adverbs) and raise their hands when they hear the structure in the song as they listen for the first time. Then, the second time around, you can ask them to write down as much of each sentence that uses their grammar structure as they can.

Dialog Lyrics

Give each student a piece of chalk/pen and tell them to fill the board with pop song lyrics. Then put them in pairs, and get them to use the words on the board to create a new dialogue.

Lyric Ordering

Cut the lyrics line-by-line or into bigger sections. Have the students reorder the scraps of paper as they listen to the song.

Hear/Didn´t Hear

Divide the class into groups. Give the students pieces of paper with words from the song (target vocabulary if applicable) and with words not from the song. Divide the white board into two halves--¨Words I Heard¨ and ¨Words I Didn´t Hear¨. Have the students tape the words on the board accordingly.

"If I Had A Million Dollars"

If teaching conditionals, teach ¨If I Had $1,000,000¨ by Barenaked Ladies.

Ask Questions

Have the students listen for answers of questions based on the song. On the first listening, ask very general questions like ¨How many people are in the song?¨. Create more specific questions in further listenings.
